History:
Newland is the county seat of Avery County—the youngest of North Carolina’s 100 counties, formed in 1911. Originally known as “Old Fields of Toe,” the settlement became the county seat when Avery County was created and was renamed Newland in honor of North Carolina Lieutenant Governor William C. Newland. It was incorporated in 1913 and developed around county government, local rail service, and mountain valley life. The town sits at 3,589 feet elevation, making it one of the highest county seats east of the Mississippi River, and reflects the rich Appalachian heritage and rural mountain culture of the High Country.

History:
Linville is a historic mountain resort community first laid out in 1883 and named for early frontier figures William and John Linville. It was deliberately planned as a mountain retreat, with streets and parks designed to complement its scenic surroundings. Linville’s Historic District includes late 19th- and early 20th-century cottages and resort buildings, and its early development was tied to tourism, golf, and connections to the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad.
